Research
CITEC’s research objectives are applied across three main research lines:
- Line 1: Sensing. This line focuses on the study of citizen technoscience initiatives aimed at designing and using low-cost and/or locally sourced technical devices (such as sensors and apps) and methodologies (such as participatory mapping) by citizens to monitor and raise awareness about the degradation of key environmental parameters such as water/air pollution, agricultural productivity, or biodiversity loss.
- Line 2: Reimagining. This line focuses on the study of citizen technoscience initiatives oriented toward the design and production of low-cost technical devices (such as open-hardware agricultural equipment) and methodologies (such as circular business models) aimed at reducing or redressing specific local effects of the socio-environmental crisis. Two types of initiatives are particularly relevant: (1) those focused on better adapting to degrading environmental conditions such as droughts or wildfires, and (2) those aimed at reducing emissions and waste from industrial and consumption processes, aligned with the circular economy.
- Line 3: Integrating. Building on the previous two lines, this line explores the historical and current interconnections between different forms of citizen technoscience, with the aim of fostering greater collaboration to strengthen their shared pursuit of substantive socio-environmental transformation.
